I havent been able to update blogg lately been busy with client project. but here is artefact 6. its a haunted playground. the scene has many effects in it i.e. moon light shining, mist/fog. also has a spooky background sound. there is also something new i added. this is the movement of abjects i.e. swings and seesaw. these abjects are moving without anyone moving them or touching them. This gives a feeling of the playground being haunted. i also added swinging sound effects for the swings and seesaw to improve the spookyness.

Here is the environment for Artefact 6. For this artefact i decided to do another environment scene. This time its a childrens playground. The enviroment has what all playgrounds have i.e. swings and seesaws and even a wheel swing. The enviroment has no background or textures as of yet.

Client Project - Characters

The characters are 2 swat, 1 terrorist and 1 hostage. The 2 swat character models are basically the same model except it has a different weapon. 1st model has the m16 assualt rifle and the second model has the Famas assault rifle. the terrorist has a ak-47 rifle.

I am pleased with my character models as i spent alot of time modling and rigging them to look and animate good. also they look like game character models which is what i was trying to make them for. I have already animated the swat characters walk cycle which when i import them to the enviroment all i have to do is copy and paste the walk cycle. Basically i will be looping the walk cycle. the terrorist and hostage hasnt been animated yet as they dont move much for the video.

Client Project Update

Just an update on my office environment for the client project. I am quite happy with environment textures and meterials and think that it deos not need anymore work on it. I am also happy with the lighting but think I should have spend a little more time on the lighting as it deosnt look right with the shadows and stufff. you know what i mean when you see the images below. im not ganna spend anymore time on it as i still have to finnish the animation and only have little time to do it in.

Artefact 5 is now also complete. There are quite a few updates to this artefact. these would be i added the flickering lights and electrical sound effects from Artefact 1. also added footsteps to add realism and more camera movement. There are other extra sound effects i added which is a window smashing just before you see the snake go past. another sound effect i added was the snake growl. i know snakes dont growl. then again its more like a big dragon without wings. hope you enjoy the animation.

This is a render of the environment i will use for this Artefact. it is a school enviroment i created with textures and materials. This is another attempt to create a first person view scene. where the camera will be the view of the character and will move as the camera moves forward.

Artefact 4 is now complete. From my last post on this artefact. I talked about the clouds. well in this post i will talk about updated things and things that have been added to the Artefact. I improved on the clouds as they didnt realy look realistic enough before but now they look good. I added the city environment. This is the same environment used in Artifact 3. I also added some sound effects. these sound effects are the roar of thunder and lighting and the background sound of rain to add the finnishing touch to the Artefact. Enjoy.

Another update on Artefact 4. nothing much only added some gray clouds to the scene. used volume fog on gizmos to create the clouds just like i created the fog in artefact 3 , but this time made the clouds alot thinker so they look like clouds.

an update to Artefact 4. added rain to the lightning. i used particle spray tools in 3ds max to create the particles. then added a matereial to the particles to produce rain drops and animated the particle spray. i also added a simple background texture to the sky. its looking pretty good. but not good enough needs alot of work. wait until the next up date of this artefact.

Here is an experiment i did for Artefact 4. I created a lightning effect using particle emitters. I put a glow material on it to give it a lightning effect. It isnt perfect but its a start on creating lightning. When i first wanted to do lightning i had no idea how i would proceed on doing lightning. with a bit of research you can get anything done

Artefact 3 is now finnished. To update i added some vehicle wrecks to the scene to give the environment a ghost town/city feel to it. I also added a background sound effect. I beleive this gives it a spooky feel to the environment. Enjoy.

here is another update to artefact 3. This artifact has lighting effects. the lamp posts have an omni light with a glowing effect on it to show the effect of the fog. The lights also have a volume light effect on them which you can see the ray of the lights through the fog. this gives it a realistic fealing to the environment.

Client Project

sorry to keep you waiting on the client project progress. I will start with the client project environement.

My client project is to develop a short animation of a Hostage rescue, which is bascally a swat team of 2 or 3 members who go into an office to rescue a hostage from a terrorist. The animation will be approximately 1 min long as it is only a teaser advert for a game that might be displayed on the internet or images of the advert may be displayed in magazines.

here are examples of some test renders that I did for the interior of the office building. its far from finnishing but will get there.

im trying to keep the poly count low so that my system can handle the renders. its ok because its for a game so low poly cout is good. i still need to work on the textures as they dont seem to be looking good will play with it a little to see what i can do.

This is an update to artefact 3 experiment. added textures to buildings and environment. also added a volume fog effect. volume fog effect uses gismos to produce fog effect. you can place these gismos anywhere you want in the environment scene.

This is the envirronment i created for the lighting and sound effects. I believe this is a good setting for the lighting and sound effects. The environment is a hallway from a futuristic building or spaceship. im not sure as i only created the hallway and not the whole ship or building. but i was trying to create a futuristic building or spaceship type feeling. below is the a render of the environment.

Final Fantasy 7: Advent children Review.

The story is a sequel to a video game called Final Fantasy 7. an RPG that came out on the playstation. The story continues from a few years later after what happened in the game.

The first time i watched this movie i watched it on a normal dvd player and it was amazing. I have recently downloaded and watched this movie in 1080p hd quality. i would say that Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children looks 10x amazing than its original dvd movie. This is because the movie has had "over 1000 revised scenes". The objects and detail look completly different. the main differences is that its HD which means there is lots of extra attention givin to detail such as the the character designs, scenery and landscapes. below are screenshots of final fantasy in HD as you can see there is lots of detail given to the landscape. You can see clearly the sharpness of HD and the bright colours giving a better experience and enjoyment in watching a movie in HD. In the first screenshot you can see the amazing detail of the hair and if you look even more closly to the eyes you can see reflections from his eyeball.

You can really tell the difference between both films if you have seen the orginal and you can notice how its been reworked as well, when i watched it in HD for the first time it blew me away as i was amazed by the details and animations. The modeling is fantastic, the setting is really great during the day, and during a certain part of the movie there is a fight sequence where one of the character is glowing which looks really great and give off alot of light but you can still see details of the character aswell, the special effects and animation are great too from the swords grinding and sparks flying, the mechanics of when the flying dragon is falling down looks so realistic in how it falls which is amazing.The film is amazing and is something you should atleast watch once even if its the dvd version its a film with great animation, great story and great character and landscape design.

i finally finished my elements logo. took me ages to think of a way to add the wind element into the logo but after all that thinking i came up with this at the end.

Virtual box Idea (Identities)

for my virtual box I thought of using a touch screen monitor as a container although you wouldn't be actually touching the screen as you would use a mouse to navigate. I had the idea of setting icons for each of the different paths which will show my identity. I think that this would help show my identity because i use a computer everyday for more than 5 hours.

so the image below is my logo design but it isn't finished yet. i have got all the elements in exempt wind. i am stuck i don't know how i am going to apply the wind element into this logo. i created this logo in photoshop using a reference image to draw over i.e the earth. this idea was pretty simple as the earth already has two elements which are water and the earth (rock). i just added the fire element which is around the earth. i used the wind filter and the blur, smudge tools to create the fire. so at this point i am stuck and am thinking of a way to add the wind element to the logo. if there are any suggestions feel free to comment on it.

Designing my Avatar (identities)

so i have gotten many ideas for my avatar from the mood board that i created for the avatar and started doing some sketches for my avatar. after i finished a few sketches of what my finished avatar might look like i started to create my avatar on 3ds max. below is a screen shot of where i have got to on creating my avatar. there is no detail at the moment like a head or clothing as i only created the outline of a humanoid at first.i will add clothing to the avatar very soon so those of you who read this blog may want to come back very soon.

i created this avatar using just one box. i did this by turning it to editable poly then moving vertices and extruding the box to the right type of shape i.e humanoid shape.

I have chosen these type of logo's because I think that this will show my personal identity well as i am into anime and most anime that i watch have these elements in them as special powers the characters use. the examples show each element separately where as my finished logo will have a combination of all of the elements in it.

Today on second life i explored korea. To get to korea i teleported by using a card i got given from touching an advertisement board. i spent most of the time chatting to other avatars that are from korea. i still dislike second life because it is simply to slow as it is continuously downloading as you go it is even slow when u are flying, walking or running.

below is a screenshot of my avatar chatting to another avatar who is a regular to SL and is from korea:

I went to another place by using the search. you can search for places by typing in a place name. i went to a place called CARDUCCI Guns Weapons Motorcycles Cars Bikes Combat Bikers. here i was earning L$1 every 10 mins by just touching a brown and green object. Its not much but better than nothing. below is the screen shot of the object i touched to earn.

i also in the same place was waiting for more cash as you can see in the screenshot below you have to wait for around 30 mins to receive L$25. i just watched tv for an hour and got L$50. oh and some other avatars spoke to me so i spoke to them back. below is the screen shot of the waiting area:

thats it for today. don't know when ill be on it next but i will try to go on second life more.

Identities--Second life--1st go

i have been on second life virtual word for about 30mins now and so far i think it is boring. Maybe its not my thing but in the 30mins i was on second life i created an avatar, actually i choose a defualt avatar from the signup when you install second life and stuck with it. i also got the feel of how to control the avatar in the virtual world. you control the avatar by either clicking the arrows on screen or using the arrows on the keyboard. you can also hookup a joypad and edit the buttons in the preferences tab but that didn't work for me. the avatar can also fly which is amazing but gets boring too. i also tried to change my clothing but didn't because it looked too complicated and there were too many options. another reason because i got bored. i also interacted with other avatars i.e. i was chatting to a 24 year old girl from new york.

The story for my narrative is that you have to find your way to the football field after a friend has called you out to play football.There are options which lead you to your death and options that lead you to either the football field or a different destination.

Colour and Light (200 words)

I have been asked to visit the Figuring Light, Colour and the Intangible Exhibition at Djanogly Art Gallery and choose a piece of work to write 200 words on colour and light.

The piece of work I have chosen to write about is “The dazzling darkness” by Rebecca Partridge. I choose this particular painting because it interested me and was attractive to look at. I like the way the colours are laid out around the black star in the centre it makes the painting look a lot more like a spiral tube. In my opinion the spiral tube engages the viewer as the eye is focussed upon this point and makes the picture look as if u are going through it. I like the use of different colours especially when the colours overlap each other creating different colours. I also thought that use of bright colours against a black background improved the contrast of the painting. I like the contrast of the painting because it makes the picture stand out a lot more, meaning it makes it more eye catching. The opacity of the colours changes throughout the painting as it turns from nearly transparent to apparent.

The Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is used in photography and in filming. This technique allows more tension, energy and interest in the photo or film than simply centering the point of interest. The rule of thirds is basically an image which can be divided into nine equal parts by two horizontal lines and two vertical lines that are of equal size.

Why is it that we want our belongings to do more for us than to function well?

When I was doing research, of which mobile phone to buy I looked at all the features that I would want in a mobile phone. I didn't just look at how the mobile phone looks from the outside and what colour it is. I wanted to know how good the video camera is, if it has a music player and if you can do video calling on it. Below are two phones one of which I purchased recently.

Both phones are almost equal in specs. The Phone on the left is a Nokia 6220classic and the phone on the right is Nokia N96. the only difference in these two phones are that the 6220c has an internal memory of 256mb but isn't a set back as you can purchase an additional 8gb external memory for around £30. the N96 has internal memory of 16gb which makes it the ideal media phone.

Why are we willing, as soon as we can afford it, to pay extra for things with appealing forms?

The Nokia 6220 is on the market for £280 and the Nokia N96 is on the market for £500. if i could afford it i would of probably bought the N96 as it is more appealing to me in form and specs i.e it is a slide phone and has 16gb of internal memory. so to answer this question i think people would buy what they can afford instead of the more appealing product but if they can afford the more appealing product thats even better. as i could not afford the n96 i went for the 6220c and bought the extra 8gb memory for £30.

For my research into Multimedia technology, I have found an article on the BBC website where they are developing a thought controlled gaming headset for gamers so that gamers can interact with virtual worlds and games without the use of a controller. Current interactions with computers are game pads, mouse, and keyboards and now even touch screens. The article I have used is located at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7254078.stm.

According to the article, the thought-controlled headset is to be released this year. The thought-controlled headset allows the user to control a game or virtual world environment by using the thoughts of the user i.e. it picks up electrical activity from the brain and sends wireless signals to a computer. The thought controlled headset implements the technology known as non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) to read the neural activity. The technology can be used to give real facial expressions to avatars of gamers in games and virtual worlds. For example, if the player smiles or winks the headset can detect the expression and translate it to the avatar in game or virtual world. The headset could detect more than 30 different expressions, emotions and actions. These include excitement, meditation, tension and frustration. The head set can also detect cognitive actions such as push, pull, lift, drop and rotate.

I have found another article of a thought controlled head set which is located at: http://www.gamersdailynews.com/story-4848-Square-Enix-Making-Brainwave-Controlled-RPG.html. In this article, it is revealed that the NeuroSky thought control head set could be interfaced with a variety of gaming platforms, including PC, console and mobile. The NeuroSky Headset is a pair of headphones, with a single electrode contacting the user’s forehead while reading the player’s brainwave information, or EEG data. A RPG game was also announced at the Tokyo game show in conjunction with the NeuroSky Headset.

I think the impact this technology will have on us will change everything in the world of gaming or for gamers, as there will be not any need of gamepad controllers, mouse or keyboards. You would simply just use your thoughts, expressions, emotions and actions to control a character or a virtual world. This can give the potential to do more interactions in a game or virtual world. If you were to use a game pad or a keyboard, you are limited to the buttons on the controller and the keys on the keyboard so I think this technology definitely will have an impact or surely has the potential of an impact to gamers.

What did i do in my first week?

My first week at uni i think went well . I have met many new people and i think made a few friends hopefully. i learned something very interesting which is you can make a camera out of a 500ml bear can. i also participated in creating a stop motion animation although i only gave out ideas on what to draw on the whiteboard and did not actually draw anything. but i did really enjoy working with the group.

What do i want to get out of my course in addition to passing?

by the end of the course i hope to have developed game designing skills and to have improved my animation skills. i also want to have a superior understanding of games design and animation using 3DS Max and Zbrush.
